A fun cheesemaking challenge and tasting, and optional wine matching, held at a venue of your choice.
1.5 hour format suitable for evening receptions and a 3 hour format suitable for activity afternoons.
Run in conjunction with Gimblett Cheese (Surrey cheesemakers and our sister company www.gimblettcheese.co.uk), the Cheesemaking Challenge combines competition, artisan cheese tastings, and a generous slice of humour and improvisation from your hosts. The event includes the option of adding tasting wines for a food matching element.
Presented by Francis and Pam Gimblett (founders of Taste of the Vine and Gimblett Cheese), the event draws on their experiences at Gimblett Cheese, as well as hosting 20 years of wine events.
After being given cheesemaking attire, teams begin the process of preparing their milk for transformation into curd for cheese.
Introduction: Whilst the milk heats, guests are given a light-hearted introduction to British cheesemaking culture, and the process of cheesemaking.
Setting, cutting and tasting challenge:Teams complete stage two of the transformation from milk to cheese: adding rennet and cutting the curd. During the activity guests taste a range of cheeses from different milks, the challenge being to identify milk type.
Draining the curd: The curd is drained, weighed, and infused with herbs, spices and flavours, and presented for judging.
Tasting challenge two: Whilst judging takes place, guests are given a range of British artisan cheeses and a challenge commences to identify elements such as: age, type, and quality, the clues for all of which are on the tasting cards, so no need for prior knowledge.
Finale: Prizes are awarded and guests go home with cheeses from the Gimblett Cheese dairy.
